Sassav/Mango Curry

Mango curry/ saansav
 Saansav is sweet and sour curry. Curry gets its sweet and sour flavour from mangoes. Added jaggery and tamrind enhances the flavour. You can serve this with roti or  rice. Many people love to eat saansav by itself as it is so tasty.


10 small ripesucking mangoes(these are special variety called Ghota in Konkani)
1 cup grated coconut
small marble size ball of tamrind
11/2 tsp red chili powder
1 tsp Jaggery
1 tsp mustard seeds roasted
½ tsp turmeric powder.
Salt to taste.


  • Wash and peel the mangoes. 
  • Squueze the skins from the pulp and keep aside. 
  • Heat skillet add mustard seeds and cover it with a lid.Make sure it doesnt burn. This will make the curry bitter.
  • When mustard seeds splutter, remove them from the skillet, add coconut, chilly powder, tamrind and grind to a paste with little water. 
  • To this paste add mangoes, salt and jaggery, boil for 5 minutes and it is ready to serve.
  • You can also give tadka of mustard seeds and curry leaves once curry is boiled.
